As spiritually enlightened people, part of our spiritual practices is honoring our ancestors, which we do through gratitude, libations, altars, ceremonies, etc., as a way of thanking them for being the progenitors and for their sacrifices.
But you don’t know exactly who you are honoring as generations pass, and that’s where genealogy comes into play.
As Black American & Indigenous American spiritual people, we have to be real specific when we are honoring our ancestors because due to colonization, we have colonist ancestors. If you know history, you would already assume that, but when you do your genealogy, seeing the names & stories of your colonist ancestors hits your soul differently, which makes your spiritual practices of honoring your ancestors even more intentional, where you make sure you focus on the benevolent ancestors.
In my genealogy research, I found connections to many of the Native American heroes & tribes, pilgrim ancestors from England, Scotland, Ireland, and West Africans who were taken from Africa during the Transatlantic slave trade. 
Genealogy really shows you that most Black Americans are a tri-racial “Melungeon” race of people (African, Native American, & European).
